I spent the past school quarter working on a flash project called Project Chimera. I gave a post-mortem to the class of how the process went, what could have been done better, what could be done in the future, etc. But yet, the fact that I made these creatures walk after their post mortem I guess technically makes them zombies...

Note: Many parts are still sketchy.

The project focuses around creatures that are built with a virtual DNA system where two creatures can mate and produce offspring. Players can then train their favorite creatures and compete in combat, races, or beauty contests. That's the idea, anyways. Tune in to my project blog at blakemaloof.wordpress.com to see if I can actually pull it off.

This coming weekend I will be at the amazing Maker Faire in the California Bay Area. I am extremely excited to attend this one-of-a-kind event for a second time and be surrounded by hundreds of brilliant people doing brilliant things.
Here is one of the videos we produced interviewing Greg Brotherton,

an amazing maker of kinetic sculpture.[More...]

Project 2 of 3 from my ZBrush class is in. He's a monster from the Nightmare game concept. He's the big, dumb, almost lovable type of monster. I would think in the game he would start out an enemy but the player has the option of befriending him. I tried to keep the semi-cartoony style of the overall game when creating him. I also focused (as I'm sure you can tell) on getting a good muscle structure on him, using a lot of human and some animal references.
Now, is he finished? Probably not. He's still painfully monotone and could use some secondary and tertiary colors to spice him up. I was messing around with putting some hard scaley skin on his back, possibly in red or dark blue. Also thinking of making the legs a slightly different color. [More...]

ZBrush class I am taking, we will be producing 3 models to hypothetically be used in a game concept that we game up with in the first week of class. I am using the Nightmare game concept I've had mulling around in my head for a while and have produced models and concept art for in past classes. The models we will be producing are an object, a monster and a character.

The object is a teddy bear with spider legs. The idea is that the spider creature has hollowed out the body of a teddy bear as a disguise and pokes its legs through the bottom. This character is the first the player meets, and helps guide the player through the beginning of the game. [More...]

My level design class is coming along nicely, and I now have something to show for the effort. The following is my initial concept painting for the environment I'll be designing and building.

Back Story:

The setting is an extra-solar space colony constructed and operated by robotic intelligence. The city was autonomously constructed by tiny swarm robots while a colony ship traversed interstellar space to the planet. The city was therefor constructed for human living by robots with no concept of emotion, comfort or any form of human culture. The resulting city is a cold, efficient machine run by an advanced robotic artificial intelligence.

I’m back at SCAD for another quarter! This quarter I’m taking a level design class and a class on Z-Brush. Both are looking to be pretty exciting, and I will certainly post updates to these projects when I have something to show. There will also be a gallery soon, I promise.
